What paint correction does
Paint correction is the machine-polishing process that removes defects from your clear coat instead of hiding them under wax or filler. Swirls, water-spot etching, oxidation haze, and micro-scratches live in the clear coat, and machine polishing is what actually takes them out. We do it in two standalone stages: a 1-step correction from $399, or a 2-step from $649 for heavier defects and deeper gloss. All of it happens at our Sorrento Valley shop, where proper lighting and dust-free conditions make precise paint correction possible.
How it works
Measure first, then polish.
Wondering why we will not quote a correction sight unseen? Because responsible polishing starts with a paint-thickness measurement. Clear coat is thin, factory paint often sits between 100 and 150 microns total, and every correction pass removes a little of it. We measure panels at drop-off, so we know exactly how much material there is to work with and which defects can come out safely.
Booking works like the rest of the shop: reserve a drop-off with the
Book Now flow or a call, bring the car to 8580 Spectrum Ln in Sorrento Valley, and walk the paint with us under the inspection lights. You will see what we see: the swirls, the etching, the spots the sun has been hiding in plain sight. Then we confirm the stage, the timeline, and the firm price before compound ever touches paint. In late summer it is worth reserving the drop-off a week or so ahead, since a correction holds a bay for a full day or more and the schedule fills front to back.
A 1-step runs one to two days; a 2-step takes two to three, because cutting and refining cannot share a pass. We text you when the car is ready and walk the finish with you at pickup, same lights, so you can compare against what you dropped off.
Straight answers
What polishes out, and what does not.
Honest correction means telling you before we start which defects will leave and which will not. The rule of thumb: if a scratch does not catch your fingernail, scratch removal by machine polishing can usually take it out or dramatically reduce it. If it catches, it has cut past the clear coat, and no amount of swirl removal brings back material that is gone. Here is how the common defects break down in San Diego paint.
Swirl marks
The spiderwebbing that automatic brushes and dirty wash mitts carve into clear coat. The most common defect we correct, and the most satisfying: a 1-step removes the bulk of it, a 2-step gets dark paint to near-flawless.
Water-spot etching
Sprinkler overspray and hard water leave mineral rings that eat slightly into the clear. Light etching polishes out fully; deep, old etching improves dramatically but can leave a ghost under harsh light. We tell you which yours is at inspection.
Oxidation and haze
Years of UV flatten the finish and turn it milky. Correction removes the dead layer and brings the color back, which is why sun-baked paint shows the most dramatic before-and-after in the shop.
Deep scratches
A scratch through the clear coat, the kind that catches a fingernail or shows primer, is beyond polishing. We reduce its visibility honestly and say so up front rather than sell a fix that will not hold. True clear coat repair is body-shop work, not polishing.
Local conditions
Why San Diego paint earns its swirls.
This climate manufactures the exact defects correction removes. Start with the sun: about 260 clear days a year of UV oxidizing clear coat, which is why ten-year-old paint here looks chalky while the body underneath is rust-free. Then the water: municipal supply runs hard, so every sprinkler that arcs onto a parked car and every driveway wash that dries in the sun leaves mineral rings etched into the clear.
The coast adds its film of salt and moisture that makes owners wash more often, and frequent washing done fast is precisely how swirl marks accumulate. Inland, heat bakes sap and droppings into finishes within a day. None of it is dramatic; all of it is cumulative.
The upside is that the same climate rewards swirl removal more than most places. Corrected gloss under San Diego sun is unmissable, and with a sealant or coating over it, the defect clock restarts from zero. By late summer the damage is at its most visible: months of high sun have baked the spring water spots and wash marring into the clear coat, and the inspection lights show every bit of it.
The number
What moves a correction quote.
Starting prices are published, from $399 for a 1-step and $649 for a 2-step, and three things move a quote up from there. Size first: more panels, more hours. Severity second: paint that has never been corrected takes more passes than paint we maintain. Color third, and this one surprises people: black and other dark, non-metallic colors show every remaining defect, so finishing them to standard takes extra refinement time.
What never moves the quote: surprises after drop-off. The measurement and inspection happen with you there, the price is confirmed before work begins, and the full price list sits on our
pricing page next to everything else we do.
Common situations
The paint that comes in for correction.
Four stories cover most of the correction work we book. If your paint fits one, the stage recommendation is usually quick.
The car-wash veteran
You have run the automatic wash weekly for three years and under sunlight the hood looks like steel wool got to it. That spiderwebbing is textbook 1-step territory, and on lighter colors it often disappears entirely. Pair the correction with a hand-wash routine afterward and it stays gone. Most car-wash veterans book the 1-step, see the result, and never let a brush tunnel touch the car again.
Common scenarios: brush-wash spiderwebbing · dirty-mitt swirls · quick-detailer scratches · dark paint that looks gray in the sun
The sun-baked daily
Years of outdoor parking have flattened the finish: the color reads dull, the reflections are soft, and wax stopped helping a while ago. Oxidation removal is where correction earns its keep, cutting the dead layer off the top and bringing the depth back. Owners routinely say it looks like a respray. It is not; it is their paint, uncovered. Expect us to recommend sealant or coating immediately after, because freshly exposed clear coat needs protection from the same sun that dulled it.
Common scenarios: oxidized hoods and roofs · faded dark colors · chalky trim-adjacent panels · years of skipped protection
Getting it ready to sell
If you are photographing the car for a listing, corrected paint is the difference between scroll-past and inquiry. A 1-step correction from $399 photographs like a much more expensive car, and glossy paint anchors the impression that the whole vehicle was cared for. Spend here before you spend on anything cosmetic inside. Buyers cannot see a transmission service, but they can see the hood from across a parking lot.
Common scenarios: private-party listings · auction photos · a stronger trade-in number · enthusiast-sale prep
Prepping for ceramic
You want a coating, and you want it locking in gloss rather than sealing in swirls. Correction is the prep that makes a ceramic coating worth its price, which is why our 3-Year and up ceramic packages include a correction stage. If your paint needs more work than a package includes, we quote the standalone correction first and coat second. Correct once, protect for years, and the swirl conversation is over.
Common scenarios: pre-coating prep · new-to-you cars with unknown wash history · paint that needs more than a package includes · correcting once before protecting for years
Worth doing yourself?
A rented buffer vs a measured correction.
Orbital polishers are cheap to rent and compound is twenty dollars. Here is the honest difference, because paint only has so much clear coat to give.
The DIY weekend
- No paint-thickness gauge, so every pass is a guess about how much clear coat remains
- Consumer pads and compounds either cut too little to matter or too much to be safe
- Burn-through on edges and body lines is permanent, and it happens fast
- Garage lighting hides the holograms and buffer trails you are creating
- Realistic outcome: mild improvement on flat panels, new defects where technique slipped
A Severin correction
- Paint measured panel by panel before any pass is planned
- Stage matched to the defect depth: 1-step from $399, 2-step from $649, confirmed after inspection
- Inspection lighting shows the true finish at every step, so nothing hides until the sun finds it
- Edges, body lines, and thin factory paint get taped or worked by hand
- Finished paint is ready for sealant or a ceramic coating the same week

After correction
Keeping corrected paint corrected.
Correction removes defects; it does not prevent the next ones. What protects the result is what touches the car afterward. The gentlest option is our
mobile exterior detail routine, hand wash and sealant, on a schedule. The durable option is a
ceramic coating applied while the paint is freshly polished, which hardens the surface and buys years before swirl removal is a conversation again.
Either way, retire the automatic brush wash. It is the single biggest reason corrected cars come back early, and skipping it costs nothing.
Timing matters too. Freshly corrected clear coat should get its protection within days, not months, while the surface is at its cleanest. Book the sealant visit or the coating before you pick the car up and the schedule takes care of itself. Corrected, protected, and maintained is the whole system; correction alone is just the first move.
Why Severin
Why correct it here.
Car paint correction in San Diego ranges from drive-through gloss packages to multi-day craftsmanship, and the difference is mostly discipline: measure first, cut only what the defect requires, refine until the finish holds up in full sun. We hold a 5.0 Google rating, we are licensed and insured, and the same hands handle correction and ceramic, so the prep and the protection never argue with each other.
The Sorrento Valley shop is set up for exactly this work: inspection lighting, dust control, and the patience of an appointment-only schedule. Your car is not in a queue; it is the job.
San Diego County
One shop, the whole county driving in.
Correction is drop-off work, so instead of us coming to you, the county comes to Sorrento Valley. The shop sits just off the 805 and 5 interchange, an easy run from most of metro San Diego, and drop-offs are by appointment so there is no waiting around. Owners in a few areas search for this work often enough that we keep dedicated pages for them.
Two practical notes for the drive in: mornings are the easiest drop-off window before the 805 thickens, and if you are coordinating a ride home, the appointment time is firm, so your pickup can be too.
