What a ceramic coating is

A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that chemically bonds to your clear coat, leaving a hard, slick layer that resists UV fade, sheds water, and makes salt, dust, and bird droppings far easier to rinse off. It is not a wax that washes away in a month. Most people come to us for one of three reasons: they just bought a new car and want to protect the factory paint before anything dulls it, they drive the coast and watch the salt air and sun flatten their finish, or they are simply tired of washing every week and want the water to bead and go. Because the coating has to bond and cure in a clean, controlled space, we perform it at our Sorrento Valley shop, not at your driveway, where dust and moisture would ruin the cure.

How it works

Drop off, we coat, you pick up.

Wondering how the drop-off actually goes? Book a time with the Book Now flow or a phone call, bring the car to 8580 Spectrum Ln in Sorrento Valley, and walk the paint with us for five minutes. That inspection is where the tier gets confirmed: what your clear coat needs corrected, which coating fits how long you keep the car, and the firm price. Nothing starts until you have all three.

Then the car goes into the bay and stays there for the duration: wash, iron and tar decontamination, clay where the tier calls for it, machine correction, a panel-by-panel wipe-down, and the coating itself, applied and leveled in still, filtered air. The 1-Year package is usually same-day. The 3-Year and 5-Year run one to two days, and the Premium takes two to three, because correction cannot be rushed.

We text you when the coating has cured enough to drive, walk you through aftercare at pickup, and send you off with paint that sheds water on the freeway home. If you need wheels while the car is with us, tell us at booking and we will help you plan around the timeline.
Straight answers

What a coating does, and what it does not.

If you have read about nano ceramic coatings and come away confused, here is the honest version. The coating is a liquid polymer, silicon dioxide in a resin, that bonds to the clear coat and hardens into a glassy sacrificial layer. It does four things well: resists UV fade, makes the surface slick enough that salt, dust, and droppings rinse off instead of etching in, beads water so the car dries cleaner, and deepens gloss because the surface under it was polished first.

What it does not do: make paint scratch-proof, survive automatic brush washes forever, or fix defects that were sealed underneath it. That last one is why preparation is most of the price. A coating locks in whatever it covers, swirls included, which is why the higher tiers spend a day on correction before any coating touches the car.

Choosing the best ceramic coating for a San Diego car is really a durability question: match the tier to how long you plan to keep the vehicle, not to the biggest number on the menu. We tell people to buy years they will actually use.

Light polish (1-Year tier)

A single gentle pass that brightens the surface and preps it for bonding. Right for newer paint with no real defects. It does not remove swirls; it readies clean paint.

1-step correction (3 and 5-Year)

One machine stage with a balanced pad and polish, clearing most swirls, light haze, and mild water etching, roughly 60 to 70 percent of visible defects, before coating.

2-step correction (Premium)

A cutting stage followed by a finishing stage. This is where deeper scratches and heavy swirls come out and dark paint gets its mirror back, roughly 80 to 90 percent improvement.

Beyond the ladder

Paint with damage past what a coating package includes gets an honest call at drop-off and a straight quote for standalone correction, so you never pay to seal in defects.
Local conditions

What this county does to unprotected paint.

Paint here does not fail dramatically; it fades quietly. The county logs roughly 260 sunny days a year, and that UV load oxidizes clear coat until gloss goes flat and dark colors turn chalky at the edges. Park outside in Escondido or El Cajon and the process runs faster, because inland heat bakes whatever is sitting on the surface into the finish.

Closer to the water the enemy is chemistry instead of heat. Salt air settles on horizontal panels every night the marine layer rolls in, and it is mildly corrosive the entire time it sits. Add hard-water spotting from sprinklers, sap along tree-lined streets, and gulls near the bays, and an uncoated daily driver is fighting on four fronts at once.

None of this is an argument that every car needs a coating. It is the context for why cars that get ceramic coated in San Diego hold their gloss and their resale so visibly: the sacrificial layer takes the abuse, and a rinse takes the layer back to clean.
Common situations

The cars that come in for coating.

Four situations bring most of the ceramic work through the shop door. If one of these is you, the tier recommendation is usually straightforward.

Brand new, still perfect

You just took delivery and want the factory paint protected before the sun and the first bad wash get to it. New paint needs little correction, so the 1-Year or 3-Year tier does the job at the low end of the price list. This is the cheapest a coating will ever be for this car, and the single most common booking we take.

Common scenarios: new purchases · lease buyouts you plan to keep · dealer paint still unmarked · protecting before the first summer

The coastal daily

If the car lives outside between the 5 and the beach, salt air and marine layer are working on the clear coat every single day. A 3-Year or 5-Year ceramic with its 1-step correction clears the haze that has already started and puts a sacrificial layer between the ocean air and your paint. Coastal cars are where owners notice the difference fastest.

Common scenarios: outdoor parking near the coast · salt film that returns weekly · water spots from marine layer · UV flattening the gloss

Done washing every weekend

Owners who are tired of the wash-wax-repeat cycle book a coating for the maintenance math. A coated car rinses clean in a fraction of the time, holds gloss between washes, and never needs wax again for the life of the coating. Pair it with our mobile maintenance details and the weekend is yours back.

Common scenarios: wax that quits in a month · hard-water spotting · no time for two-bucket washes · wanting the daily to look garage-kept

The keeper

Some cars are staying a decade: the paid-off truck, the enthusiast car, the one you promised yourself. For those, the 5-Year and the 7 to 9 Year Premium with its 2-step correction and warranty cost the least per year of protection. Correcting once and sealing the result beats re-polishing every few years, both for the paint and the wallet.

Common scenarios: long-term keepers · dark paint that shows everything · garage queens and weekend cars · trucks kept past the loan

Consumer kits vs a shop application.

Spray-on ceramic kits are everywhere, and for some cars they are honestly fine. Here is the difference you are paying for.

The $30 to $80 kit

  • Consumer formulas are diluted for forgiving application, so durability runs months, not years
  • No paint correction, so any swirls and etching are sealed underneath the product
  • Applied in a driveway, where dust, wind, and moisture land in the finish while it flashes
  • Streaks and high spots are common first-timer results, and removing a cured high spot means polishing
  • Fine choice for an older daily you just want slicker for a season

A Severin ceramic package

  • Professional-grade coating with a rated lifespan of one to nine years by tier
  • Paint corrected first, so the coating locks in gloss instead of defects
  • Applied and cured in a controlled indoor bay, then inspected panel by panel under proper light
  • Aftercare walkthrough at pickup, so the coating actually reaches its rated life
  • From $299, priced by tier and vehicle size, confirmed before work starts

Making the coating last its full life.

A coating is durable, not invincible, and the difference between a five-year coating lasting five years or three is mostly the wash routine. The first stretch matters most: the coating keeps hardening after you drive home, so we ask you to keep the car dry and unwashed for the first several days, and we give you the exact window for your package at pickup. If it catches rain in that stretch, do not panic, just do not scrub it.

After that, the rules are short: hand wash or touchless, never automatic brushes; use a pH-neutral soap; dry with a clean microfiber instead of letting water evaporate; do not let bird droppings sit for days in the sun; and skip waxing entirely, because the coating replaces it. None of it is hard, it is just different from how an uncoated car gets treated.

The easy version of all this is letting us handle it. Our mobile exterior details are coating-safe by default, and a membership keeps a coated car on a wash schedule that protects the investment without you thinking about it. Coated cars on a maintenance plan are the best-looking vehicles we service, full stop.
Why Severin

Why coat it here.

Ceramic work is where a shop earns or loses its reputation, because mistakes live on the paint for years. We hold a 5.0 rating on Google across 22 reviews, we are licensed and insured, and the same hands do the correction and the coating, so nothing gets lost between steps. The Sorrento Valley bay gives the coating what a driveway never can: still air, controlled temperature, proper lighting, and uninterrupted cure time.

Ceramic coating in San Diego is a crowded menu, so compare honestly: published starting prices, correction included at the tiers that need it, a warranty on the Premium package, and a firm number before work begins. If the paint needs more correction than a coating package includes, we say so at drop-off and quote the standalone correction straight.

Common questions

Ceramic coating questions answered.

What do the ceramic coating packages cost?

We offer four ceramic packages, priced by vehicle size. The 1-Year Ceramic starts at $299 for a sedan or coupe and $399 for an SUV or truck, with wash, decon, and a light polish. The 3-Year Ceramic starts at $699 / $799 and adds clay and a 1-step correction. The 5-Year Ceramic starts at $899 / $999. The 7 to 9 Year Premium Ceramic starts at $1,199 / $1,299 with a 2-step correction and warranty included. Where do I drop my car off for ceramic coating?

Ceramic coating is performed at our shop at 8580 Spectrum Ln in Sorrento Valley, San Diego. Unlike our mobile detailing, this service is not done at your home, because the coating needs a clean, climate-controlled environment and cure time a driveway cannot provide. You book an appointment, drop off, and we coordinate pickup.

Why can’t you apply ceramic coating at my house?

A ceramic coating is a liquid that chemically bonds to your clear coat and then has to cure undisturbed. Dust, wind, pollen, or moisture landing on the surface during application or cure will ruin the finish. Our Sorrento Valley shop gives the coating the dust-free, controlled conditions and the multi-day cure time it needs to bond properly.

How long does the ceramic coating process take?

It depends on the package. The 1-Year Ceramic is a 5 to 7 hour job, usually same day. The 3-Year and 5-Year Ceramic, which include a 1-step correction, are a 1 to 2 day process. The 7 to 9 Year Premium Ceramic is a 2 to 3 day process because the 2-step correction itself takes time before the coating goes on. We give you a firm timeline when you book.

Do I need paint correction before a ceramic coating?

Often, yes. A coating locks in whatever is on the paint, so any swirls, scratches, or water spots get sealed in if they are not corrected first. The 1-Year Ceramic is light prep with a light polish. The 3-Year and 5-Year Ceramic include a 1-step correction to remove most defects, and the 7 to 9 Year Premium Ceramic uses a 2-step correction for maximum gloss before the coating. We assess the paint and recommend the right level. Heavier defects can also be handled as standalone paint correction, from $399 for a 1-step or $649 for a 2-step.

How long does a ceramic coating actually last?

It varies by package. The 1-Year Ceramic holds for about a year, the 3-Year for three, the 5-Year for five, and the Premium Ceramic carries a 7 to 9 year rating with the warranty included. Real-world durability also depends on how the car is washed and stored, which we walk you through at pickup.

What does a ceramic coating protect against in San Diego?

San Diego paint takes a beating from coastal salt air, marine layer moisture, and strong year-round UV, plus bird droppings and tree sap. A ceramic coating adds a hard, slick layer that resists UV fade, makes salt and contaminants far easier to rinse off, and helps water bead and sheet away instead of spotting. It does not make paint scratch-proof, but it meaningfully slows the wear.

How do I wash a car after it has been ceramic coated?

A coated car is much easier to maintain, but it still needs proper care. We recommend a gentle two-bucket hand wash or a touchless wash, and skipping automatic brush washes, which can mar the coating over time. We give you simple maintenance guidance at pickup so the coating performs for its full lifespan.

Is ceramic coating worth it on a new car?

A new car is the ideal time to coat, because the factory paint is in its best condition and a coating protects it before salt air, UV, and washing dull it. Coating new paint usually only needs the 1-Year or 3-Year Ceramic rather than heavy correction, which keeps the cost down. It is one of the most common reasons people book with us.
