A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that chemically bonds to your clear coat, leaving a hard, slick layer that resists UV fade, sheds water, and makes salt, dust, and bird droppings far easier to rinse off. It is not a wax that washes away in a month. Most people come to us for one of three reasons: they just bought a new car and want to protect the factory paint before anything dulls it, they drive the coast and watch the salt air and sun flatten their finish, or they are simply tired of washing every week and want the water to bead and go. Because the coating has to bond and cure in a clean, controlled space, we perform it at our Sorrento Valley shop, not at your driveway, where dust and moisture would ruin the cure.
Drop off, we coat, you pick up.
Then the car goes into the bay and stays there for the duration: wash, iron and tar decontamination, clay where the tier calls for it, machine correction, a panel-by-panel wipe-down, and the coating itself, applied and leveled in still, filtered air. The 1-Year package is usually same-day. The 3-Year and 5-Year run one to two days, and the Premium takes two to three, because correction cannot be rushed.
We text you when the coating has cured enough to drive, walk you through aftercare at pickup, and send you off with paint that sheds water on the freeway home. If you need wheels while the car is with us, tell us at booking and we will help you plan around the timeline.
What a coating does, and what it does not.
What it does not do: make paint scratch-proof, survive automatic brush washes forever, or fix defects that were sealed underneath it. That last one is why preparation is most of the price. A coating locks in whatever it covers, swirls included, which is why the higher tiers spend a day on correction before any coating touches the car.
Choosing the best ceramic coating for a San Diego car is really a durability question: match the tier to how long you plan to keep the vehicle, not to the biggest number on the menu. We tell people to buy years they will actually use.

Beyond the ladder
What this county does to unprotected paint.
Closer to the water the enemy is chemistry instead of heat. Salt air settles on horizontal panels every night the marine layer rolls in, and it is mildly corrosive the entire time it sits. Add hard-water spotting from sprinklers, sap along tree-lined streets, and gulls near the bays, and an uncoated daily driver is fighting on four fronts at once.
None of this is an argument that every car needs a coating. It is the context for why cars that get ceramic coated in San Diego hold their gloss and their resale so visibly: the sacrificial layer takes the abuse, and a rinse takes the layer back to clean.
The cars that come in for coating.
Four situations bring most of the ceramic work through the shop door. If one of these is you, the tier recommendation is usually straightforward.
Brand new, still perfect
Common scenarios: new purchases · lease buyouts you plan to keep · dealer paint still unmarked · protecting before the first summer
The coastal daily
Common scenarios: outdoor parking near the coast · salt film that returns weekly · water spots from marine layer · UV flattening the gloss
Done washing every weekend
Common scenarios: wax that quits in a month · hard-water spotting · no time for two-bucket washes · wanting the daily to look garage-kept
The keeper
Common scenarios: long-term keepers · dark paint that shows everything · garage queens and weekend cars · trucks kept past the loan
Consumer kits vs a shop application.
Spray-on ceramic kits are everywhere, and for some cars they are honestly fine. Here is the difference you are paying for.
The $30 to $80 kit
- Consumer formulas are diluted for forgiving application, so durability runs months, not years
- No paint correction, so any swirls and etching are sealed underneath the product
- Applied in a driveway, where dust, wind, and moisture land in the finish while it flashes
- Streaks and high spots are common first-timer results, and removing a cured high spot means polishing
- Fine choice for an older daily you just want slicker for a season
A Severin ceramic package
- Professional-grade coating with a rated lifespan of one to nine years by tier
- Paint corrected first, so the coating locks in gloss instead of defects
- Applied and cured in a controlled indoor bay, then inspected panel by panel under proper light
- Aftercare walkthrough at pickup, so the coating actually reaches its rated life
- From $299, priced by tier and vehicle size, confirmed before work starts

Which ceramic tier is right for your paint?
Higher tiers correct more paint defects before the coating goes on, so the finish looks better and the protection lasts longer.
Making the coating last its full life.
After that, the rules are short: hand wash or touchless, never automatic brushes; use a pH-neutral soap; dry with a clean microfiber instead of letting water evaporate; do not let bird droppings sit for days in the sun; and skip waxing entirely, because the coating replaces it. None of it is hard, it is just different from how an uncoated car gets treated.
The easy version of all this is letting us handle it. Our mobile exterior details are coating-safe by default, and a membership keeps a coated car on a wash schedule that protects the investment without you thinking about it. Coated cars on a maintenance plan are the best-looking vehicles we service, full stop.
Why coat it here.
Ceramic coating in San Diego is a crowded menu, so compare honestly: published starting prices, correction included at the tiers that need it, a warranty on the Premium package, and a firm number before work begins. If the paint needs more correction than a coating package includes, we say so at drop-off and quote the standalone correction straight.
